The third largest School of Zen in Japan is called the Obaku Zen School (the other two are the Rinzai and the soto schools). This school was established by the Zen patriarch Ingen-Ryuki who, in the Shoo period (circa 1654) left his native China and founded Manpuku-ji, a head temple of the Obaku school in Uji, southeast of Kyoto.
